Impatiens is made to function as a ground cover. The bushy appearance, the evergreen foliage, the low growth height of 30 cm on average… Unfortunately, this plant is extremely sensitive to frost, which is why it is preferably kept in a pot.

Plant outdoors or in a pot
This Balsam species does not last long outdoors. It dies at the latest with the first frost. If you still want to plant them outdoors, you should choose a semi-shady location, for example a place on the edge of the wood. The plant in the garden is well suited for discounts.
In pot culture in the home or on the balcony, Impatiens walleriana feels extremely well cared for in planters, pots and balcony boxes (€109.00) in a partially shaded spot. The plant can be planted from May. The planter should be at least 15 cm in diameter.
In addition to the direct purchase of an early young plant, sowing by hand is usually successful. The seeds are sown in spring. The soil - a conventional potting soil is sufficient - should have the following properties:
- relaxed
- permeable
- nutritious
- to keep well moist
Hibernation if you care about the plant
At 10 to 15 °C (maximum 20 °C) impatiens will overwinter at home. A bright place is required for this. In the field or outside on the balcony, this Balsam does not survive when temperatures drop below 0 °C.
Around mid-May, the plant is allowed to move out again. During the winter you should either not fertilize at all or fertilize sparingly every 4 weeks. Don't forget to water! Regular checks for pests such as spider mites and aphids are also recommended. The danger of an infestation exists above all in dry room air (not uncommon in winter).
Prune and repot after overwintering
In order to preserve the bushy appearance, it is advisable to carry out a pruning in the spring after wintering. The plant should then be repotted if another pot culture is planned. After repotting in new soil, Impatiens does not need to be fertilized.
tips
Since the flowering subsides after a few years, you should always sow the plant again or grow cuttings.
