On each package of quinoa there is a note that the small grains of the pseudo-grain should be washed before consumption. The purpose of cleaning is not to remove soil or pesticides, but to remove bitter-tasting saponins.

Rinsed under running water, quinoa loses its bitterness

Wash quinoa

Washing is easy if you use a very fine-meshed kitchen sieve.

  1. Fill the strainer about half full with the quinoa seeds.
  2. Rinse under running water until the drained liquid runs clear.
  3. Drain the water and place the quinoa in a saucepan.

Always wash the quinoa thoroughly, otherwise the dish that is prepared afterwards will taste unpleasantly bitter.

No sieve at hand? This is how the quinoa still gets clean:

If you don't have a sieve whose meshes are fine enough, a laundry net, a thin cotton cloth or a muslin diaper will help:

  1. Put the grains on the fabric.
  2. Twist the cloth tightly at the top.
  3. Rinse the pseudocereal well under running water.
  4. Wring out and put in the pot.
  5. Sticking grains can be removed with a tablespoon.

An old coffee pot with a press stamp is also useful.

  1. Put some quinoa in the pot.
  2. Put water on it and press the stamp down.
  3. Drain and refill with water.
  4. Repeat until the liquid runs clear.
  5. Put the quinoa in the saucepan and continue to process.

How is quinoa cooked?

The preparation of the pseudo-grain is very simple:

  1. For every 100 g of quinoa, put 200 ml of salted water or vegetable stock in a saucepan.
  2. Bring everything to a boil over high heat.
  3. Turn the stove down to medium and the water should simmer.
  4. Simmer for 15 minutes until the grains appear translucent.
  5. If you prefer very soft cooked quinoa, you can increase the cooking time by five minutes.
  6. Drain, let rest briefly and serve.

Tricks how quinoa can still be prepared

  • Before cooking, you can roast the grains in oil. This gives the small seeds a pleasant nutty aroma.
  • Quinoa cooks well in a rice cooker or food processor with a cooking function.
  • Place the washed quinoa on a baking sheet and place in the oven at 170 degrees for 30 minutes, the grains will pop. The crispy quinoa gives the muesli the right crunch.

tips

Quinoa can be grown in almost any location in your own garden, provided there is full sun. The harvest of the pseudo-cereal is quite uncomplicated: pick off the plants with the ripe seeds and hang them upside down in a dry place. After a few days you can simply shake off the seeds into a large bucket.
