Have you never seen a fern in bloom? Why is that; in the wrong place at the wrong time? Or do ferns not form flowers at all?

There is not a single variety of fern that flowers

Ferns do not have flowers

Real ferns are so-called spore plants. They form neither flowers nor fruits or even seeds. But sometimes the spores appear as if they were flowers. For example, the royal fern creates numerous spore capsules that are reminiscent of flowers.

Gloxinia are not ferns

Sometimes gloxinias are offered in the trade, which are wrongly called 'flowering ferns':

  • Leaves look a lot like fern fronds
  • are spring to summer bloomers
  • love partially shaded to sunny locations
  • have pinkish-yellow flowers

tips and tricks

Although ferns do not form flowers, they are a valuable aspect in the garden with their deciduous, wintergreen to evergreen fronds, as they thrive where other plants struggle.
