Some shy away from preparing Brussels sprouts because they fear cleaning the vegetables would be time-consuming. With the right technique, however, the little florets can be cleaned and washed very quickly and then cooked within a few minutes.

Brussels sprouts also need to be washed before consumption

cut off the stalk

Already when buying, you should pay attention to smooth, flawless, green and tightly closed florets. Due to the storage, however, it is unavoidable that the stalk of the Brussels sprouts turns dark, even with good quality.

Therefore, in the first step, cut off the dried interface.

Pick off unsightly leaves

In most cases, the outer, rather hard, yellowed or fibrous leaves have already come loose. If this is not the case, pull it off towards the stalk with your fingers.

Wash Brussels sprouts

Since Brussels sprouts don't grow on the ground and are almost always sold pre-washed, some people don't wash the florets. But since you never know how many hands the vegetable has already passed through before it is sold, you should still clean the Brussels sprouts thoroughly before cooking:

  1. First, run water in the sink.
  2. Put in the cleaned florets and move them around with your hands.
  3. You can rub off dirt with your fingers.
  4. Remove Brussels sprouts and drain in a colander.

Cook Brussels sprouts

Brussels sprouts only take five to seven minutes to cook. That's why this vegetable is perfect for quick cooking.

  1. Place the Brussels sprouts in a pot of boiling water with a little salt added.
  2. Turn the heat down a bit, the water should just simmer.
  3. The Brussels sprouts are done when you can pierce the florets with a knife.

storage at home

Proper storage at home is important to keep Brussels sprouts crisp. After shopping, put the vegetables in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator. First remove the plastic packaging and wrap the florets in a slightly damp kitchen towel.

If you find Brussels sprouts rather heavy in your stomach, season them with fennel, aniseed or caraway. These make the cabbage easier to digest.

tips

To ensure that the hard stalk is just as tender as the leaves after cooking, cut a cross in it after washing.
