Lovage is also known under the name Maggikraut, because the taste of its leaves is reminiscent of the aroma of the well-known spice mixture. The seasoning intensity depends on the environmental conditions. Their development requires a good supply of nutrients.

Lovage is very hungry for nutrients

long-term fertilization

The maggi herb is one of the heavy feeders, which withdraw large amounts of nutrients from the soil every year. In order for the spicy leaves to develop a strong aroma, basic fertilization is necessary. This is done for the first time when planting in the garden and is refreshed every year.

compost

Every year lovage needs about three liters of organic fertilizer per square meter of root ball. Fresh compost, which is applied as a mulch layer or slightly worked into the substrate, is ideal for the basic supply. Grass clippings, horn shavings (€32.93) and bone meal provide a nitrogenous alternative. These fertilizers are administered in two parts. Nutrients are added in March or April. Subsequently, between July and August, fertilization takes place.

Short-term nutrient supply

If you do not have compost available, it is advisable to administer short-term nutrient suppliers. Fertilization starts at the beginning of the growing season and lasts until August at the latest. The plants no longer require any additional nutrients once the first flowers appear.

vegetable manure

A manure made from stinging nettles provides the lovage with nitrogen, magnesium and iron and has a strengthening effect, making the herb resistant to pest infestation. For ten liters of brew you need about one kilogram of fresh nettle shoots or 200 grams of dried herb.

Manual:

  • cut fresh shoots into small pieces
  • put in a bucket
  • fill up with water and cover with a jute sack (10.99€).
  • Stir batch daily
  • Leave in a warm place for two weeks

The fermentation creates unpleasant odors, which are bound by adding rock flour (14.13€). The brew is ready when no more bubbles rise.

liquid fertilizer

Organic liquid fertilizers are of plant or animal origin and provide the plants with nutrients in a readily available form. They are administered with the irrigation water or spread on the leaves with a spray bottle and provide the lovage with numerous trace elements. This also has a positive effect on the floor.

tips

Potted lovage should be supplied with a liquid fertilizer for herbs and crops every four weeks.
