Purchase Criteria

drive

Mechanically: Mechanical lawn shears are the classics. Their main advantages are the easy handling, the low weight and the low price. Of course, the effort for the gardener is higher with such a design.

electric: Electric lawn shears make cutting grass much easier. However, you need an easily accessible socket and are constantly in danger of stumbling and injuring yourself from the power cable. In addition, an electric lawn trimmer is more expensive - both in terms of purchase and in terms of follow-up costs.

battery powered: Like electric lawn trimmers, battery-powered versions are energy-saving and more expensive than mechanical models. Compared to electrical versions, they offer spatial flexibility because they do not require a power connection. However, they only last for a limited time before the battery has to be charged.

our recommendation
WORX 20V cordless grass and shrub shears WG801E.3, PowerShare, hedge shears, lawn shears 12 cm shrub trimmer, 10 cm grass blade, telescopic handle, lawn edge shears, 18V
119.99 EUR To the product

Note: In this guide we will focus on mechanical lawn shears. We deal in detail with electric and battery-powered grass trimmers in a separate buying guide.

Type

Small lawn shears without a handle: You can work very precisely with the so-called hand grass shears. But: Since you have to work with the small lawn shears crouching, kneeling or on all fours, your knees and back are strained. Be careful not to remain in the pose for too long at a time, so as not to put too much strain on the affected areas of the body.

Large lawn shears with a handle: With the "big" lawn shears, i.e. the one with a handle, it's exactly the other way around. Since you can work standing with this model, the strain on your knees and back is usually limited. But the precision falls a bit short - due to the distance between your leading hand and the actual scissors. Also, keep in mind that handle trimmers are heavier and bulkier, which can put strain on your shoulders and arms.

Rotating blades

Grass grows as it will. You can't always get it between the blades of the scissors if you hold them horizontally. In the long run, it can become very taxing on the wrist to turn the scissors several times in order to move them vertically in between.

Ergonomic lawn shears therefore have blades that can be rotated by 90, 180 or - even better - 360 degrees to make work easier for gardeners and to protect their hands and wrists. So you can always hold the scissors in a way that feels good and still catch all the blades of grass.

serrated edge

Blades with a special serrated edge are considered sharper. They should also stay sharp longer in this form, so that you don't have to regrind them as often. But: If it then becomes necessary, the wave shape makes sharpening a little more complicated than with completely straight blades.

non-stick coating

When buying lawn shears, also make sure that the blades are non-stick coated. The coating means that no or at least significantly fewer blades of grass stick, which has two advantages:

  • no sudden drop in cutting performance while cutting grass
  • more comfortable, faster cleaning after gardening

In addition, the non-stick coating prevents not only dry but also damp grass from stapling to the blades of the scissors.

blade length

The longer the blades, the more grass the grass shears capture per cut and the faster you can finish cutting. However, versions with long blades also weigh more and are therefore heavier in the hand.

Guide value: Large blades are about 18 to 20 centimeters long.

If there are particularly narrow, angled areas in your garden, lawn shears with shorter blades often make more sense because you can work more precisely with them.

Guide value: Small blades are about twelve to 14 centimeters long.

handle ergonomics

When comparing different lawn shears, also take a close look at the respective handle. The manufacturer's descriptions, user reviews and authentic test reports will help you to get a first impression. Whether a pair of scissors really fits in YOUR hands is something you have to try out in practice. In any case, it is important to have a non-slip grip (ensure it with a rubber or plastic coating).

frequently asked Questions

What are lawn shears?

The lawn shears, also known as grass shears or lawn edge shears, are practical gardening tools that complement the conventional lawn mower. Because the more filigree scissors remove the grass in the areas that the rather coarse-motored mower cannot cope with.

How do lawn shears work?

This is shown in the following video using Gardena lawn shears:

How much do lawn shears cost?

Mechanical lawn shears are also available in high quality at low prices. Good models are available from around ten euros. On average you pay between 15 and 30 euros. Battery-powered versions (without a handle) are also available from around 20 euros. Models with a handle usually cost significantly more.

How do I properly clean my lawn shears?

As with other secateurs (€17.82), it is best to first remove coarse dirt from the blades with a soft brush. Then wipe them off with a damp cloth. You should never use aggressive cleaning agents to protect the coating and the blade material.

How can I sharpen my lawn shears?

Gradually, the blades of the lawn shears become blunt - a completely normal thing when the device is used regularly. At the latest when you notice a drop in performance when cutting the grass, it is time to regrind the blades. To do this, use a manual sharpening stone or a (wet) sharpening machine.

Is there a lawn shears test by Stiftung Warentest?

No, the Stiftung Warentest has not yet made a direct comparison of lawn shears. We will inform you here if anything changes.
