Purchase Criteria

consistency

Grained: Granular cattle dung is made from dried manure. It usually smells significantly less than fresh, untreated manure.

pelleted: Pelleted cattle manure is slightly coarser, but otherwise has the same properties as single-grain manure.

untreated: Untreated cattle manure is normally only available in professional agricultural facilities (farm et cetera). It must then be worked directly into the ground or mixed with the earth after collection. However, the strong smell is not for sensitive noses.

NPK composition

In order to find out which cattle manure is the right one for your needs, you should firstly know which nutrients your plants need and to what extent; on the other hand, the NPK composition of the fertilizer must be clear, i.e. it must be specified by the manufacturer.

Note: NPK stands for nitrogen (chemical symbol N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). These three ingredients are the most important for almost all plants.

Commonly found in cattle dung

  • about two to five percent nitrogen,
  • about one to three percent phosphorus and
  • about 1.5 to four percent potassium.

You can use these guidelines as a rough guide.

purity

Ideally, the selected product contains only cattle manure, with no other ingredients. Exceptions: pelleting aids, living microorganisms and hummus. These extras promote an easily applicable consistency, a rapid effectiveness of the cattle manure and an optimal supply of the soil. However, chemical or mineral additives must not be mixed in under any circumstances.

organic quality

When it comes to cattle manure, it is definitely worth taking a closer look at the quality. If you opt for a certified organic product, you can rest easy. Because then it is clear that the cattle from which the manure comes have only eaten organic food and basically lead a species-appropriate life.

However, cattle manure that is not of organic quality is also an option - as long as your research shows that you are getting a valuable product with it.

packaging

It is extremely practical if the cattle manure is sold in a resealable packaging. Then after opening you just have to make sure to close the package well again and store the whole thing in a dry place. Otherwise you will be forced to seal the pack tightly with the aids or even to decant the contents, which is a laborious process.

capacity

Depending on how much cattle manure you need for your garden, the content should be more or less extensive. Our analysis has shown that the price per kilo is usually cheaper the larger the unit is.

tips

It can definitely be worthwhile to get a decent supply if the spatial conditions allow it. Because the shelf life of pelleted cattle manure is several years - due to the fermentation during the manufacturing process.

frequently asked Questions

What is cattle manure?

Cattle dung is a natural fertilizer that usually consists of dried cattle manure. Manufacturers process the manure into granules or press it into pellets. The latter are somewhat coarser-grained. Some cattle manure is also offered untreated (i.e. undried) or mixed with chicken manure. In all (pure) variants, cattle manure acts as a highly effective and cost-effective complete fertilizer.

Being 100 percent organic, cattle manure is non-toxic. So you don't have to worry if your pet sniffs or nibbles on the dung. In addition, you have the security of not letting any chemicals get into your precious plants, but promoting growth in a completely natural way.

It should be emphasized that cattle manure not only supplies the plants with important nutrients, but also improves the soil quality in the long term. Due to the composting during production, it contains a lot of humus and thus also helps the soil to form humus. Furthermore, cattle manure is resistant to rain and other environmental influences.

For which plants is cattle manure suitable?

Among the many advantages of cattle manure is that it is suitable for all plants in the garden without exception. So it doesn't matter whether you want to fertilize roses (e.g. peonies), rhododendrons or hydrangeas, vegetables and fruits such as cucumbers, tomatoes or strawberries or your entire lawn. Cattle manure is also perfect for giving young plants a powerful injection of nutrients right from the start.

Cattle manure, horse manure or horn shavings - which is best?

While cattle manure and horse manure cover the whole spectrum of required nutrients, horn shavings (32.93€) are a pure nitrogen fertilizer. Therefore, the shavings should never be used as the sole fertilizer, but only as needed for heavy consumers such as tomatoes. In addition, it also absolutely needs full-fledged fertilizer.

Cattle manure and horse manure are considered full fertilizers. Cattle manure often contains a little more nitrogen, while horse manure usually has a touch more phosphorus.

Note: Horse manure should only be used in pelleted or granulated form. When fresh, it often contains seeds from unwanted plants such as weeds and too high levels of ammonia, which would damage the soil.

How do you fertilize with cattle manure?

Cattle dung is a long-term fertilizer. Bring him out twice a year.

  • First fertilization in spring (basic fertilization): Manufacturers usually recommend 100 to 200 grams per square meter
  • second fertilization in summer/early fall: manufacturers generally recommend 50 to 100 grams per square meter

Make sure to distribute the fertilizer evenly. Depending on the specific product, leave the cattle dung above ground or work it into the ground with a rake.

These are only guidelines and guidelines. Always take into account the manufacturer's information on the packaging or in the description of the respective cattle manure.

In principle, you should only fertilize during the growth period, i.e. for the second time at the end of September or beginning of October at the latest.
