Anubias nana is one of the smaller spear leaf species. The Bonsai variety is the miniature version of this species. Externally, it resembles its relatives, but it also finds space in the smallest aquarium. Here's what to know about this Anubia.

Anubia nana is very small and is also suitable for mini aquariums

The look

The name Bonsai is a clear statement of the size of this Anubia. Otherwise their appearance is not much different from that of the other Anubia nana subspecies. Here are the exact key data of this mini plant:

  • grows only 3 to 5 cm high
  • Width reaches 5 to 10 cm
  • compact growth
  • Leaves are about 1.5 to 2.5 cm long and 1 to 1.5 cm wide
  • also shows its flowers under water

Notice:
The Anubia "Petite" is offered commercially. It is not identical to the "Mini", but is a separate breed with pointed leaves.

living conditions

The Anubia nana bonsai is so small that it can and even should be used in so-called nano aquariums. Because in larger plant communities it would disappear optically. It is often used in so-called aquarium scaping. This is a technique for designing aquarium landscapes.

Anubia bonsai is easy to care for. In the aquarium, the plant needs water that is 22-28 degrees Celsius warm and gets by with little light. Their growth is very slow. Owners who are bothered by this can intervene to speed it up. For example by giving nutrients and supplying Co2.

tips

Once the rhizome of this Anubia is several inches long, it can be divided for propagation. There should be 2-3 leaves left on each piece.

untie

The rhizome of this mini plant must not be covered by substrate, which is why it is only cultivated as an epiphytic plant. So the root of Anubia is surrounded by water.

Stones or dead roots of trees can be used as attachment options. Together they form a natural-looking, decorative element. Suitable roots are offered in shops for aquarium supplies.

Before the Anubia nana bonsai can cling to the stone or root with its own adhesive roots, it must be secured. Special aquarium plant glues are also commercially available for this purpose. However, it can also be fixed by tying it with sewing thread, which is removed again after it has grown.
