The various varieties of the pear are experiencing a renaissance in many private gardens and parks today, as they have an extremely decorative look with pretty flowers and magnificent autumn colors. However, the service pear, which grows like a bush or tree, also shows a very pleasant speed when it comes to growth.

Rock pears can reach a considerable size

Vigorous growth and yet manageable

Depending on the variety and location, a pear grows in height by around 20 to 60 cm per year. In this way, pear trees can be formed into hedges or obelisks over the years. At the same time, caring for the pear is not too much work, since the plants can be kept in check with a maximum of one pruning per year.

The growth per year of the service pear also depends to a certain extent on the maximum height that the respective variety can reach. The following varieties are therefore also differently suitable for hedges or as solitary plants:

  • Rock pear (Amelanchier arborea): growth height of more than 6 m possible
  • Common service pear (Amelanchier ovalis): between 1 and 3 m tall
  • Copper pear (Amelanchier lamarckii): about 4 to 6 m tall
  • Spiked service pear (Amelanchier spicata): between 0.5 and 2 m tall

tips

The fruits of the pear are edible. A fruitful hedge of vigorously growing service pear trees can therefore not only serve as a habitat for animals, but also provide raw material for healthy juices and jams.
