A park or a botanical garden is hardly imaginable without borders, while in the home garden one speaks more of flower beds. However, the transition is fluid. You can create borders with hardy plants or annual flowers.

What is a discount anyway?

A long and rather narrow bed is referred to as a border, with which lawn areas are bordered, for example. The old Dutch "rabat" means "hem of the dress" and has French origins. Some also speak of discounts in the front yard and mean the beds along the way to the front door.

What is meant by alternating planting?

Borders are often designed with alternating planting. They are replanted at least in spring and summer, often again in autumn. Care is then usually limited to watering and plucking weeds. The advantage is that you always have a lushly blooming bed. On the other hand, the frequent plantings are disadvantageous.

In the fall, prepare the borders for spring by planting flower bulbs. Snowdrops, winter agarics and crocuses appear in late winter and provide a bit of color in the garden. This is followed later by hyacinths, tulips and daffodils, which are also available in dwarf form.

Can I also create discounts easily?

With alternating planting, you have to replant the entire border two or three times a year. This is undeniably a lot of work. If you plant flowering shrubs or hardy perennials instead, there is no need to plant them, which usually requires regular pruning. Roses, for example, are popular. So that you don't have to constantly remove weeds, you can cover your borders, for example with gravel or bark mulch.

The essentials in brief:

  • when planting alternately, replant two to three times a year
  • Tips for spring: horned violets, tulips, forget-me-nots, wallflowers, pansies, hycinths
  • Summer tips: mixed summer flowers, dahlias, zinnias, coneflowers, lobelia, cosmea, verbena, sage
  • Tips for autumn: heather, autumn asters, ornamental grasses, ornamental cabbage
  • Tips for the winter: ornamental grasses, snowdrops, crocuses, winter lice

tips

Borders offer too little space to bloom lushly all year round. With interesting foliage colors, individual flowering plants and ornamental grasses, they are never boring.
