When buying, the photo on the packaging reveals which flower bulbs we are holding in our hands. But at the latest when we dig them up again, the question arises: which flower bulb belongs to which flower? And is it of good quality to guarantee us magnificent buds?

Flower bulbs should be firm and plump

quality and freshness

In the trade, flower bulbs may have to wait for a buyer for days. The conditions at the sales stand are not always optimal. There may therefore be a loss of quality. It's no use that it's a special bargain.

Flower bulbs that have been dug up and overwintered in autumn should also be subjected to a quality check before planting. The healthier a flower bulb is, the more beautifully it will bloom.

quality features

You can recognize a flawless, healthy flower bulb by the following characteristics:

  • it feels firm and plump
  • has no soft spots
  • has no damage or stains
  • does not smell musty of mold

tips

The size of a flower bulb also plays a role. The larger specimens of a flower variety have more energy than smaller bulbs. They will sprout more vigorously and form larger flowers.

Different types of flower bulbs

Each flower bulb variety has a slightly different bulb, both in shape and size. Knowing which variety is in which onion helps us with the visual design of the garden or balcony.

Purchased flower bulbs can be quickly recognized by the illustrated packaging. Loose bulbs, on the other hand, have no visible sign that indicates later flowering. Without special knowledge, nobody can correctly classify a flower bulb.

General guidelines

If you have a bunch of different flower bulbs in front of you and don't know which varieties they are, the following guidelines will help you:

  • small onions mostly belong to small varieties
  • large bulbs tend to produce large flowers
  • onions that look alike belong to one variety

Compare with pictures

You will surely know which bulbous plants have bloomed in your garden. Search the web for onion photos of these varieties. Compare the pictures with the onions you have in front of you. You will quickly be able to assign them correctly.

tips

Perhaps a garden neighbor already has more experience in this area. Then he can help you in no time to assign them correctly.

Identify flower color

In addition to the type of bulb, the color of the flower is also important when designing the flower bed. Unfortunately, the flower bulb does not reveal this characteristic to us.

It only helps to make a mark during flowering and to keep it during storage. But be careful: Some bulbous plants like to change color. Tulips, for example, return to their wild colors of yellow and red over the years.
