Regular pruning prevents oleanders from becoming bare and encourages new shoots to sprout again and again. In this way, the shrub remains beautifully bushy and can produce many flowers. Oleander is usually pruned in the spring after it has been cleared out, but you can also do this before putting it into winter quarters.

Thin out oleanders and remove weak shoots
However, if you prune oleanders before wintering, you should not decimate them too much. The plant will certainly suffer damage from the hibernation, which you will have to tackle with scissors in the spring. However, if the oleander has been pruned too much in autumn, there may not be much left at the end. The shrub will sprout again, but since it flowers on two-year-old wood, the flowering should be rather poor. If you want to cut oleanders before winter, just thin them out and remove weak and dead shoots - this is enough until spring.
tips
Also check the shrub during the winter, for example for lack of water, pest infestation or similar problems. The sooner you intervene, the better.
