It is a nuisance for every gardener when the medlar stops flowering. The search for the reason is different from case to case. Both incorrect care measures and suboptimal site conditions can be possible causes.

If the medlar does not bloom, this can have very different causes

These factors negatively affect the development of flowers:

  • an unsuitable location
  • not enough water
  • lack of nutrients
  • a pruning in the spring

An unsuitable location

The photinia likes a spot with bright conditions. A shaded and dark location between other trees reduces the willingness to bloom. The shrubs develop few or no flowers as they lack the energy of the sun. While changing the location of potted plants is not a problem, transplanting shrubs in the garden is only possible with young trees. Give the shrub a light and wind-protected place.

Not enough water

Despite their moderate water requirement, photinas are sensitive to drought. The soil should never dry out completely as this condition will negatively affect the plant's growth performance. The wood tries to save energy by no longer developing flowers. Water the plant regularly once the top layer of soil has dried. This applies both to plants in the bed and to shrubs in the bucket. Moderate watering prevents waterlogging in the substrate.

Lack of nutrients

If the supply of nutrients via the roots decreases, the plant has to conserve its energy reserves. The photinia reacts to the lack of nutrients with reduced flowering. They support the wood with fertilization, which is ideally done in spring. This is where the growth phase of the leaves begins. A long-term fertilizer provides the plant with nutrients for several months. It ensures that the plant has enough nutrients available for the development of the flower buds.

A spring pruning

Regular pruning stimulates the flowering of the shrubs. The right time is important, because the trees develop their flower buds, which bloom the following year, in autumn. If you only cut back the medlar in spring, branches with flower buds will also be cut off. Remove disturbing branches before the onset of winter and make sure that the shrub has enough branches available. Even after cutting back in autumn, lust mites develop flower buds for the next year.
