Bush beans feel particularly comfortable on the raised bed. Not only are they supplied with many nutrients, the warm soil ensures good, rapid growth. Read below how to plant bush beans in a raised bed step by step.

Bush beans can be grown earlier in raised beds and can therefore be harvested earlier

The advantages of growing on the raised bed

Bush beans do not belong to the heavy consumers and can therefore also cope with nutrient-poor soils. Nevertheless, they also feel quite comfortable on a nutrient-rich bed. The big advantage of growing bush beans in raised beds is not the many nutrients in the soil but the warmth.

Ground frost does not reach the raised bed due to its height and the decomposition processes inside result in higher ground temperatures.

Bush beans need soil temperatures of at least 8°C to germinate. Outdoors, these are usually not reached until the end of May. However, you can sow bush beans on the raised bed from the beginning of May, just like in the greenhouse.
So, by growing on the raised bed, you can:

  • Sow the bush beans earlier.
  • Harvest the bush beans earlier.
  • Harvest the French beans comfortably without bending down.
  • In addition, the bush beans are more protected from voracious animals due to the height.

The only downside to growing French beans in a raised bed is that the delicate French beans are more exposed to wind and weather than they are on the ground. However, you can counteract this by combining the bush beans with higher neighbors. Here is a list of the best neighbors for bush beans. You can also help the bush beans to become more stable by piling them up. You can read here how it works.

Growing bush beans on the raised bed: A guide

For cultivation on the raised bed, all you need is a raised bed, a small spade and the French bean seeds. Bush beans do not grow very high and therefore do not need climbing aids. Then proceed as follows:

  • Make two to three centimeter deep pits 30 to 40 cm apart in the soil. If you want to be on the safe side, sow a French bean every 15 to 20cm and prick them out later. There should also be a distance of at least 30 cm from the edge.
  • Put the French bean seeds in the holes and cover them with soil.
  • Water your bush beans.
