Garlic is planted twice a year. As if that wasn't enough, the gardener has a choice of two methods for sticking his garlic. So much gardening freedom invites you to try it out.

Spring or fall - the choice is yours

Garlic not only convinces with a wide range of uses. The medicinal and spice plant also scores with flexible dates for planting.

  • in February/March for a harvest in the same year
  • in October for garlic ready to be harvested next year

Experience has shown that garlic that has been planted in autumn matures into larger bulbs. This may be due to the longer dwell time in the ground or the intensive cold stimulus in the change of seasons.

This is how the location for garlic should be

In order for garlic to thrive, there are a few site conditions to consider.

  • sunny, warm, sheltered position
  • humic, well-drained, loamy-sandy soil
  • a moderate nutrient content promotes the aroma

Knowledgeable hobby gardeners use the protective effect of garlic on diseases and pests. In mixed cultivation with strawberries, carrots, tomatoes or peppers, the spice plant keeps uninvited guests away from its neighbors. On the other hand, garlic should not share a location with beans, peas, cabbage or potatoes.

Step-by-step instructions on how to stick garlic

Both spring onions and garlic cloves are suitable as planting material. If your neighbor is already cultivating garlic, simply ask him for spring onions after flowering. The small purple seeds are cut out of the flower. Alternatively, chop a tuber into cloves.

  • loosen up the bed soil and weed thoroughly
  • optionally incorporate finely sieved compost
  • Tuck toes 6 cm deep, tip up
  • Spring onions are only 2-3 cm deep in the ground
  • the ideal planting distance is 15-20 cm

Sufficient row spacing of 45 to 50 cm makes subsequent care work much easier. The addition of fertilizer is discussed controversially among hobby gardeners. If there are no nutrients, the plants remain smaller, but in return develop a more intense aroma.

Take special precautions when planting in the fall

Although garlic is one of the hardy plants, winter protection is recommended after autumn planting. A thick layer of foliage or straw works wonders in this regard. The warming effect is topped by mulch film, which also suppresses weeds next spring.

However, you should refrain from using the often proclaimed bark mulch. This material has been shown to draw nutrients from the soil. In this case you could not avoid the administration of fertilizer, which in turn is at the expense of the garlic taste.
