The cultivation of garlic does not impose a tight schedule on the hobby gardener. At the same time, planting Allium sativum allows different approaches. With our tips, gardener's life becomes easier, at least in these points.

spring or autumn? - at will

Only a few medicinal and aromatic plants give the gardener such a free hand when it comes to the planting time. Of course, that's not the only reason you're putting your garlic. Flexibility is always an advantage:

  • Garlic poke in October for big onions next year
  • planting in February or March shortens the waiting time for the aromatic pleasure

On both dates you also have the choice of planting garlic in the bed or in the planter. As a result, no one has to do without the home-grown spicy delicacies, because there is always an alternative.

Favorable site conditions

In order for the kitchen classic to have a successful season, the modalities at the location play a central role:

  • sunny location promotes best growth
  • warm, protected and bathed in air
  • permeable soil, likes sandy-loamy
  • good vegetable soil as a substrate in the balcony box

Garlic does not place particularly high demands on the nutrient content of the soil. Experienced hobby gardeners even advocate a rather lean clod. The special garlic aroma should develop more delicately in this case.

Put garlic correctly without prior knowledge

Garlic cloves or the purple seeds are suitable as planting material. We recommend buying fresh cloves from a local specialist shop, if only for quality reasons. Since the onions don't keep for long, it's worth asking fellow hobby gardeners.

  • carefully weed and rake the soil
  • Plant the garlic cloves upright, 5-7 cm deep
  • Sow bulbs no deeper than 2-3 cm
  • a suitable planting distance varies between 15 and 20 cm

If you like, you can work previously sieved compost into the soil. To water, place the spray head on the watering can so that the substrate is not immediately washed away.

tips and tricks

After autumn planting, light winter protection is an advantage. Optionally, a mulch layer made of straw, leaves or pine needles protects the garlic from frost and snow. Put garlic in the planter, ideally wrap it in warming bubble wrap and place it on wood or styrofoam.
