Olive trees, especially the older specimens, are a wonderful eye-catcher on the balcony, terrace or in the garden. However, if you want to buy a stately specimen that is many decades or centuries old, you will quickly realize that such an olive tree can quickly cost several hundred to thousands of euros. So what price is actually reasonable for an olive tree?

Olive trees from the hardware store
Sometimes you get a real bargain in the hardware store or garden center: young olive trees - often as standard trees with a spherically cut crown - which are sold for around ten to twenty euros. These saplings are a maximum of one to two years old and are ideal for people who keep an olive tree as a houseplant or just want to try it out. However, these trees have no proof of origin, i. H. You cannot verify where the sapling was raised. This is bad insofar as you cannot know what the winter hardiness of the tree in question is. In addition, it is usually wild and not precious olives.
Buy olive tree from the specialist
If you want to be on the safe side and maybe even want to harvest olives yourself, then it is better to buy a noble olive from a specialist. This can be a tree nursery - for example in Italy or Spain - or a provider from Germany. Make sure that the tree you want was not simply imported, but that the dealer can give you specific information about the growing conditions. This is important because you should choose a tree that is used to the temperatures you will be in. Also, not every one of the approximately 1000 known varieties is suitable for cultivation in Germany.
How much does an olive tree cost?
Depending on age and size, an olive tree costs between 60 and several thousand euros. The older and larger such a tree is, the more expensive it is - in particular the several decades to centuries old trees, so-called solitaires, are really expensive. A tree with a trunk circumference of around 10 centimeters costs between 60 and 90 euros, depending on whether it is a short trunk or a high trunk. With a trunk circumference of twenty centimeters you already pay around 200 euros, with 50 centimeters around 450 to 500 euros. Alternatively, you can of course grow an olive tree yourself.
tips and tricks
Not every dealer, especially on the Internet, is reputable. Some traders are said to be selling old olive trees at what appears to be an unbelievably bargain price - these trees are mostly specimens sawn from the wild and which usually don't survive long either. If the prices seem too cheap, fraudsters are usually at work - don't fall for them.
