You have different ways to cultivate your lucky bamboo. Of course, the easiest thing to do is to leave it in the jar you bought it in. If you don't like this idea, you can also repot the lucky bamboo.

Lucky bamboo thrives in both potting soil and water

The choice of location

The lucky bamboo likes to be bright, warm and humid. Whether you grow it hydroponically, in a vase, or in potting soil, give your lucky bamboo a bright but not full sun spot with high humidity. If the air is rather dry, then spray the Lucky Bamboo regularly with lime-free water.

The choice of substrate

Whether you prefer to use expanded clay (19.73€) for hydroponics or classic potting soil is entirely up to you. However, it is better not to switch lucky bamboos that have been cultivated in soil to keeping them in water or hydroponics, as this is quite tedious and time-consuming.

More important than the choice of substrate is the right climate for good growth and health of the otherwise easy-care Lucky Bamboo. This plant stops growing at temperatures just below 18 °C. If the temperature only drops below that for a short time, for example when airing out briefly in winter, this usually does not damage your lucky bamboo.

Preparing for planting

If you would like to plant lucky bamboo that has been cultivated in water in the ground, then make sure that the stems are well rooted. If in doubt, wait a while before transplanting until the roots of your lucky bamboo are strong enough. Choose the pot high enough for the plant to stand securely in it. Grown in soil, lucky bamboo can grow up to a meter tall.

Place the Lucky Bamboo about as deep in the ground as it was in the water before. You can certainly plant several stems in one pot if the pot is the right size. The stems can be braided into pretty arrangements. But they should still be young and easy to bend.

Care for freshly planted lucky bamboo properly

Freshly planted, the lucky bamboo needs a lot of water. Make sure the soil is neither dry nor really wet. It is best to use stagnant water or rainwater for watering, never tap water that is rich in lime. If you have used fresh potting soil, your lucky bamboo will not need any fertilizer for the time being.

The essentials in brief:

  • Can be planted in hydroponics or soil
  • only plant well rooted in soil
  • after planting in soil, water a little more abundantly for the time being, but do not fertilize

tips

You can plant your lucky bamboo in potting soil or hydroponically, whichever you prefer. For planting in soil, however, it should be well rooted.
