- Don't just cut trees - this is how shortening works
Many a gardener underestimates the actual growth potential of a tree or has the misconception that a forest tree can easily be kept at a low height by pruning. What works for a bonsai doesn't work for a garden tree - that's why it is important to carefully consider whether it is actually necessary or even permissible to shorten the tree.

Regulatory approval often required before trimming
Even in your own garden, trees must not simply be cut down or shortened. The tree protection statutes in force in many communities often stipulate in detail whether, when and how trees and even large hedges may be cut back. In particular, large and old trees are considered worthy of protection, with the specifically measured size being an important criterion for obtaining a permit. However, very different limit values apply depending on the city or municipality. Very old trees even fall under the regulations of monument protection.
Don't just cut trees - this is how shortening works
If the tree has grown too big, you should not simply cut it down, even with official approval: Coniferous trees in particular resent such a procedure, especially since they do not sprout again from old wood and the tip will therefore always be missing. But even deciduous trees react to a cutting of the top with the development of numerous, vertically striving shoots - and can also develop problems with the roots. Since trees always strive to keep the relationship between root system and crown in a balanced relationship, a simple pruning often results in root death. These begin to rot and, with bad luck, can result in the gradual death of the tree.
How to shrink a tree crown
However, instead of pruning the top of the tree, you can carefully trim the crown of the tree. To do this, proceed as follows:
- Thin out the crown by cutting out crossing and inward-growing shoots.
- Now reduce the tree crown by always removing the branches growing under a branching side shoot.
- Experts call this "deriving".
- Trim the crown evenly to preserve the tree's natural appearance.
Please note, however, that any pruning measures will always result in increased expulsion of the tree!
tips
If, on the other hand, the tree crown is to be narrowed, only cut back the lower side shoots.
