Hobby gardeners should definitely note that Central European frosts can be dangerous for this southern plant. Even the hardy banana tree does not survive our winters. For winter protection in the home garden, only a few actions are required, which can be implemented quickly.

Method 1:
The banana tree gets a winter-proof packaging. For this purpose, a wire frame is attached to the trunk. A diameter of about 50 centimeters is ideal.
This is then filled with leaves. Beech leaves are ideal for this, as they rot and decay very slowly.
In the next step, a film is placed over all leaves and the frame. For excellent results, it is necessary to ventilate on frost-free days. In this way, the internal temperature always remains constant. This procedure also avoids unfavorable condensation.
Method 2:
The entire perennial is sawn off just above the ground. A blanket of straw or leaves follows.
In addition, styrofoam plates with tarpaulins can be placed over them.
Important:
As soon as no more frosts are announced, the tarpaulins must be removed.
Disadvantage:
- Perennials only grow up to 3 meters high in spring.
- No harvest in sight
Alternative: winterproof with an electric warm-air device
Hobby gardeners can continue to play it safe by using an electric warm air device. In wintry temperatures from -6 degrees Celsius, this is used 2 to 3 times a night (15 minutes each).
Timers are suitable for controlling this regular heating. In addition, the plant benefits from a guaranteed winter-proof quarters at its favorite location. The top priority here, however, is to avoid condensation.
