Banana plants grow very quickly. They can grow up to 2 meters in length every year. For this reason, in our climes, these plants can be transplanted at least once a year.
Good preparation
As with other plants, the best time to change pots is spring. Basically, you only repot when the old flower pot is too small. Once the roots start to emerge from the waterholes, the perfect time has come.
Clay pots are best suited as a new home. Depending on the expected size of the plant, a correspondingly large format should be chosen. The new pot must still offer sufficient support.
Perfect potting soil
After repotting, the banana tree recovers very quickly. It quickly goes back to further growth.
A loose, permeable plant substrate is suitable as a substrate. A pH of around 7 is ideal. Peat is also suitable for cultivation.
Protective plant substrate
Since the banana plant is a favorite spot for pests and vermin, special focus should be placed on the right substrate.
It has proven useful to disinfect the plant substrate before repotting:
- in the oven or microwave
- about 15 minutes
- at least 160 degrees Celsius
The treated substrate can then be used immediately. It should be slightly moistened for planting.
More handles
When repotting, it is important to carefully separate the saplings from the mother plant. These draw heavily on maternal energy.
In addition, hobby gardeners can also remove a piece of the root ball with a clear conscience. These often form strong spurs underground. These simply have to be solved.

With good growth, the plant pleases with many leaves. One or two new magnificent specimens per week are child's play. However, when choosing the time to repot, only the size of the root ball should be considered.
