Basically, the banana plant does not need regular pruning. In some cases, it can be beneficial for well-being and handling. The fast-growing banana tree then delights with new shoots.

illness

You can cut off diseased or pest-affected leaves immediately without hesitation. This avoids spreading. At the latest next spring, after the hibernation, the banana tree will sprout again. During this time, continue to water and fertilize normally, depending on the variety.

This also applies if the entire banana plant is affected. In this case, the cut starts at the trunk, just above the ground:

  • Height: 2 - 3 centimeters
  • only as an emergency measure

winter protection

Depending on the type of perennial, the banana tree must be transported to the cellar or conservatory for the winter. Some varieties, such as the Japanese fiber banana, even overwinter outdoors in mild temperatures. Corresponding measures can be simplified if the plant is severely shortened.

In the end, only the strong root ball with the lower part of the perennial is overwintered. If you want to experience the miracle of the banana blossom and later the fruit, pruning is generally prohibited during the hibernation.

growth

Banana plants can easily reach 2 meters with optimal care. This can be problematic for indoor plants. However, a blend is only recommended if you want to wait until next spring with new shoots.

Ideally, small offshoots can already be seen. These can be grown into new plants. Very large banana trees may also find new owners in the city zoo, botanical garden or even in public spaces of the city administration.

tips and tricks

In any case, a suitable tool must be used. A sharp pair of scissors is used to prevent the perennial from being damaged when cutting the leaves.
