Breeding or natural wonder?

Where plums and apricots feel at home and thrive magnificently, Plumcots or Apriplums have been growing for hundreds of years. Nature combines apricots with cherry plums or Chinese plums.

Tip:

The Biricoccolo (black apricot, pope apricot) is currently conquering the hearts of German garden lovers. This ancient genus of plants originated from a cross between apricot and cherry plum. It is characterized by its sweet and very juicy character. In addition, it is extremely hardy. Biricoccolo grows throughout Germany.

From the hybrids (Plumcots or Apriplums) of the first generation, after further breeding, Pluots or Apriums emerge. Botanists refer to this process as cultivar formation. As a result, the new varieties are characterized by smaller seeds and a distinctive sweetness.

pluots

Floyd Zaiger bred this combination in the 20th century. Due to their smooth surface and colour, the fruits look very similar to plums. According to this scheme, a USA variety is currently conquering the world market. The Pluots - Brontosaurius egg come from apricots, plums, peaches and nectarines.

Apriums

Apriums emerged from complex breeds by Zaiger. They have essential characteristics of apricots.

Plum cose: cultivation and care

The mixed fruit is as juicy as a plum and sweet as an apricot. Kids love this fresh treat. Due to its low growth height (maximum 3 meters), the hardy plum cose is suitable for cultivation in smaller gardens. It is a pretty eye-catcher in front gardens.

Always remove the lower shoots during the first few years. In this way, the small tribe develops well. When planting, simply mix humus soil with compost and horn shavings.(32.93€) The easy-care plum cose prefers natural fertilizer.

Notice:

  • Location: sunny to semi-shady
  • Soil: nutritious, slightly loamy
  • sandy soil is not suitable
  • Fertilization with compost: annually, after harvest

Always keep the soil moist. This has a particularly positive effect on fruit formation. From the third year, the plum cose bears dark reddish fruits in late summer.
