Cultivating a pineapple as a houseplant on the windowsill does not have to remain a dream. Small-scale varieties with enchanting foliage are a hit for limited living spaces. Our guide shows how the care works as desired.

This is how an ornamental pineapple becomes an eye-catcher

Resourceful breeders came up with beautiful ornamental pineapples to meet the frequent requests from hobby gardeners for pineapple plants for indoor cultivation. The pineapple champaca, pineapple bracteatus and pineapple comosus 'Variegatus' varieties, which remain small, impress with their colorful foliage and blend harmoniously into living spaces. The distinctive plants can be purchased in well-stocked specialist shops and online shops. How to care for the exotic plants for magnificent growth:

  • the ideal location is sunny with shade in the blazing midday sun
  • the temperatures are constantly between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius
  • Water the ornamental pineapple regularly, allowing the substrate to dry out in the meantime
  • from March/April to August/September every 14 days fertilize with a liquid preparation

The tropical houseplant only unfolds its unique beauty when it is surrounded by high humidity. A daily shower from the spray bottle with lime-free water therefore rounds off the care program in a sensible way.

Overwinter pineapple as a houseplant properly

The ornamental pineapple does not fall into a wintry calm in the conventional sense. In view of the limited light conditions, the temperatures can fluctuate around 20 degrees Celsius. Humidity of at least 60 percent is essential. Therefore, continue to spray the pineapple as a houseplant regularly. Water only when the substrate has dried. The plant does not receive fertilizer during the winter.

Uncomplicated propagation by Kindel

Like its larger relative, a houseplant pineapple flowers and bears fruit only once. Before the mother plant dies, it produces offspring on its own in the form of side shoots. These thrive well visible at the base and have all the characteristics of a self-sufficient pineapple plant. This is how the propagation succeeds:

  • Cut off kindel with a length of 10-15 centimeters
  • plant in peat sand or potting soil in a 10 cm pot
  • Put a transparent plastic bag over it and let it root in a warm, semi-shady place

After 8 to 10 weeks, the young plant forms a new root system. The hood can now be removed to transplant the plant and care for it like an adult specimen.

tips and tricks

If you don't want to miss out on enjoying the fruit of a pineapple as a houseplant, you can grow a baby pineapple (Ananas nanus). With a growth height of 35 centimeters, the variety fits into every living room. The cute fruits are suitable for consumption.
