The tamarillo, also known as the tree tomato, is native to South America. It does not tolerate temperatures below zero degrees. In winter it therefore needs a cool, light-flooded place in the house or conservatory.

Ideal conditions for overwintering the tree tomato

  • 5 degrees minimum temperature
  • Lots of light
  • Water little
  • Don't fertilize

Bring the tamarillo through the winter

During the winter, the tree tomato takes a rest period when it does not bloom and only grows a little.

A temperature of 5 degrees is sufficient in winter. During this time, only water when the root ball is almost dry. You are not allowed to fertilize at all during the winter break.

Before bringing the tree indoors, check the leaves and trunk for pests and diseases. These spread very quickly in the winter quarters and damage the plant.

tips and tricks

Gardening experts recommend cutting back tamarillos heavily in winter. Then they develop a bushier growth and do not shoot up as quickly.
