Cyclamen attract a lot of attention when they are in bloom. After that, they pass the scepter on to other perennials. This is the case in summer. But what do cyclamen do in summer while other perennials are blooming?

Cyclamen does not flower in summer

Regenerate outside

Summer time means regeneration time for the cyclamen. It should be spared for 8 weeks and allowed to regenerate outside. Cyclamen that were kept indoors in pots while they were flowering should be brought outside in the summer.

Reduce fertilizing and watering

During the rest period, the cyclamen should be watered sparingly and not fertilized. The soil should not dry out. As a precaution, it is advisable to mulch the root area of the cyclamen.

From the end of the flowering period, the water supply is slowly reduced. This is recommended so that the leaves dry up. If you do not restrict watering and fertilizing and thus prevent a dormant phase, you must expect your cyclamen to have a shorter life expectancy.

Until June you should not expect too much from the cyclamen. From the end of June/beginning of July you can fertilize again. In late summer (towards the end of September) you can let the cyclamen move back into the house.

Cyclamen do not like heat or drought

So that summering works: place your cyclamen in a shady spot in the garden. Locations under shrubs or shady trees are well suited. There, these heat-sensitive perennials are spared from summer heat and drought.

Propagate and repot in early summer

Before the cyclamen growing season resumes in late summer, you have several options, some of which would be rather harmful to the plant during the growing season:

  • repot
  • transplant
  • division of the tuber
  • sowing the seeds

Summer cyclamen bloom from August to September

But there is one exception: the summer cyclamen. As a rule, flowering begins in August and lasts until September. Such specimens should always be placed or planted as cool as possible. Otherwise they will not bloom for long.

tips and tricks

The first flower buds should have formed on the cyclamen by autumn. If this is not the case, the cyclamen may not have survived the summer and may have died due to drought, for example.
