Fertilizing is considered an important part of caring for cyclamen. A lack of nutrients can have an adverse effect on vigour, flowering endurance and resistance to diseases and pests. Therefore: Proper fertilization needs to be learned!

Fertilize just before and during flowering
In contrast to most other perennials, cyclamen are fertilized from July/August and until March. This is the period of their flowering period when they need a lot of nutrients. Otherwise the flowers will not last long.
If these perennials are in pots, they receive fertilizer every 2 to 4 weeks (every 8 weeks at the latest). If they are outside in the bed, it is sufficient to fertilize them every 2 to 3 months. In general, fertilizer can be applied as soon as new leaves and flowers appear.
Summertime is rest and closed time
Cyclamen has its rest period in summer. Then it should ideally not be fertilized. The fertilizer would probably harm him. However, if you insist on beautiful leaves that do not turn yellow, you can also fertilize your cyclamen sparingly in summer.
Usually, the resting phase lasts at least 8 weeks. It begins in April/May and ends in June. After the rest period, the watering frequency increases and the fertilizing is slowly increased again.
Which fertilizer is suitable?
A conventional liquid fertilizer is a good choice for potted cyclamen. But fertilizer in the form of sticks is also suitable. It is advisable to use the fertilizer in a weak concentration and to mix the liquid fertilizer into the irrigation water. On the other hand, cyclamen in the garden should be supplied with compost or another complete organic fertilizer.
Benefits of proper fertilization
If you fertilize your cyclamen properly, you will achieve several advantages:
- ensures a rich bloom
- ensures a long-lasting flowering period
- reduces the risk of disease and pest infestation
- has enjoyed the plant for many years
tips and tricks
Cyclamen left outside in the garden can be given a generous layer of compost in the fall. On the one hand, the compost fertilizes and, on the other hand, it protects the plant from severe frost in winter.
