Pear trees can only be propagated by variety through grafting. A refinement can be carried out in various ways. The simplest method is copulation. Goatfoot grafts or oculations are not necessarily suitable for beginners.

The different methods of finishing

When grafting the goat's foot, a wedge is cut into the substrate, the so-called goat's foot. The scion is pushed into there and fastened with raffia.

The special feature of budding is that only the noble eye, a dormant bud, is inserted into the rootstock.

Copulation is the simplest type of refinement. The scion and base are cut at an angle and connected to each other.

What you need for a refinement:

  • Edelrice from the pear tree
  • document
  • A very sharp knife
  • Bast for wrapping
  • tree wax

The noble rice

The scion is a straight, annual shoot of the pear tree. The best time to prune it is in winter, when the plant has not yet sprouted.

The length of the rice should be at least four inches long and as thick as a pencil. Four buds must be felt on the cut shoot.

If you want to carry out grafting in April, you must protect the rice from drying out until then. It is best to pound it in damp sand.

The underlay

A related tree serves as a base. In the case of pears, it is often a quince, because quinces are robust and ensure a good harvest. A rice is selected from the base that stands vertically upwards.

The refinement

Both shoots are cut diagonally up to six centimeters long. Caution: Never touch the interfaces with your fingers, as this can transmit bacteria!

The interfaces are firmly joined and fixed with raffia. The wound is then sealed with tree wax (€12.96).

Next spring, carefully unwrap the bast and see if the two shoots have connected and new shoots have formed.

tips and tricks

If this is your first time trying to graft a pear tree, don't be discouraged if you don't succeed the first time. Perhaps the scion was not well selected, the temperatures were too low or the timing was not favourable. It will definitely work next time.
