Pear trees are among the classic fruit tree varieties for the garden. By choosing the right location, you create the basis for rich harvests. At the same time, by planting in a suitable place, you prevent fungal diseases and pests.

Preliminary considerations for the right location

Pear trees can live up to 200 years and reach considerable heights over time. Treetops several meters in diameter are not uncommon. Just as expansive as the crown, the root system runs underground.

When choosing the right location, the space requirements of the tree must be taken into account. Once the tree is fully grown, it can hardly be transplanted without heavy equipment.

In the case of monoecious pear varieties, you must plant at least two pear trees, otherwise fertilization will not work. Depending on their size, the trees must be planted at least three to eight meters apart.

Site conditions for pear trees

Pear trees love it in the sun and then develop particularly sweet fruit. However, they also thrive in a semi-shady place where the fruits get at least several hours of sun. On the other hand, they do not like the wind so much and should therefore be planted in a sheltered place.

Some strains tolerate wind and cooler temperatures better than others. The choice of pear variety should be made according to the prevailing site conditions.

The soil texture

In principle, pear trees grow well in any humus-rich garden soil that is not too calcareous. If necessary, an enrichment with mature compost or mature stable manure improves the soil quality.

Like all fruit trees, pear trees need a lot of water. However, the pear does not tolerate waterlogging at all. In this case, ensure good drainage.

In very dry locations, a layer of mulch around the tree grate prevents the roots from drying out.

  • Sunny to partially shaded position
  • Sheltered place
  • Lime-poor, humus-rich soil
  • Moist soil without waterlogging

Your garden is too small or you can't find an ideal location? Simply grow the pear tree in a bucket or as espalier fruit. The yield is not as high as with an outdoor pear, but you can keep several pear varieties.
