Can you grow pomegranate trees outdoors?

Pomegranate trees are sensitive to frost, so in this country they are mainly cultivated as a container plant and overwintered frost-free. In regions with a milder climate, cultivation as an outdoor plant is possible. The hardy varieties offered in specialist shops can withstand minus temperatures of around 15° C without damage.

Pomegranate plants can be grown from seeds or cuttings. In the case of plants grown from seed, however, it is questionable whether they will flower or even bear fruit. Plants grown from cuttings often produce rich flowers even as young plants.

Which location and substrate are suitable?

The pomegranate trees, which are native to subtropical regions, love sunny, sheltered spots in the garden or on the terrace in summer. In winter they need a frost-free place that can also be dark. Well-drained garden soil is well suited as a substrate.

When is the best time to plant and repot?

Container plants can be planted all year round. The self-cultivated young plants should only go outside when there is no longer a risk of frost, i. H. around mid-May. Repot as needed when the roots in the pot have become too small.

When and how does Punica granatum bloom?

The flowering ornamental varieties bloom red, orange, more rarely white or yellow in the summer months. The flowers can be single or double. The flowers of the dwarf variety Punica granatum Nana are particularly lush. This tree is slow growing and flowers as soon as a freshly rooted cutting.
