The pretty flowering and intensely scented lavender is also popular in Germany in gardens and on balconies. Many plant lovers would also like to enjoy the plant indoors, but the subshrub is not very suitable for keeping indoors.

Lavender should be outside in the summer

There is a large variety of beautiful houseplants, but they all have one thing in common: they come from tropical and subtropical regions and could therefore not survive outdoors in our climate zone - with the exception of hot summer days, when some palm trees also grow on the balcony feels good. Mediterranean plants, such as lavender, are less suitable as houseplants. At least in summer, the plant should be allowed to stand in a sunny spot on the balcony or in the garden. Indoor cultivation usually means that the plants do not get enough sun and are therefore weakened. Infestation with plant pests and fungi is very often the result.

Dried lavender as home decoration

However, you don't have to do without the wonderful scent of lavender in your home. Instead of a living plant, you can also simply use dried bouquets of lavender to decorate your home. For this you use flowers as well as stems and leaves, which are either braided or packed in potpourris or scented bags.

Overwinter lavender in the room

Overwintering in a heated room is also problematic, because unlike tropical plants, lavender needs a winter break. However, most types of lavender are not hardy and therefore belong in a cold house in order to imitate the conditions of the Mediterranean homeland. Cold house hibernation means that the plants hibernate indoors at around 10 to 12 °C - this can also be in the (little or unheated) bedroom or in a stairwell.

Lavender that has been warm over the winter usually dies

On the other hand, if you overwinter your lavender in the heated living room, it will most likely not survive the winter. Like so many Mediterranean plants, lavender is evergreen and therefore needs more light the warmer it is in winter. However, the light intensity that we have in winter is not sufficient for the lavender. Furthermore, a warm hibernation prevents the lavender from its urgently needed vegetation break, it is weakened and thus more susceptible to diseases.
