If you like to cook a lot with fresh herbs, you can grow them relatively easily yourself using seeds or cuttings - including thyme, of course. It's not only cheaper than constantly buying expensive (and overgrown) herb pots from the supermarket, it's also a lot more fun. A particularly green thumb is also not necessary - after all, you can simply fall back on our tips that have been tried and tested in practice.

Propagate thyme from cuttings
With many plants, the propagation of cuttings works very well, including thyme. Propagation via cuttings (or cuttings) has the advantage that you know exactly what you are getting - after all, the shoot used has exactly the same genetic material as the mother plant. The best time to cut young shoots for propagation by cuttings is just before flowering - i.e. in the months of May and June.
- Cut off a fresh shoot about 10 to 15 centimeters long.
- Use a sharp and clean cutting tool for this, preferably a knife.
- The cut should be made at a slight angle so that the cuttings can absorb water more easily.
- Remove the lower leaves.
- Dip the cut in rooting powder.
- Plant the shoot in a pot with potting soil mixed with sand.
- The cutting can also be planted outside.
- Keep the substrate evenly moist.
- As soon as the cutting develops new leaves, it has formed roots and can be repotted.
Propagation via sinkers
However, propagation is even easier with so-called sinkers, because the side shoots of the plant develop roots all by themselves if they are close enough to the ground. Take advantage of this fact by simply digging a small hole near the shrub, bending down a nearby branch and covering it in the middle - the top end looks out on the other side - with soil. To prevent the sinker from slipping out again, you can weigh down the area with a stone. On average, it takes about three to four months for the small offshoot to root and be separated from the mother plant. Therefore, you should also set sinkers in May or June at the latest.
tips and tricks
Unlike lavender, thyme can also be propagated by division. To do this, simply cut off the desired runner together with its roots and plant it again in the desired location.
