The rearing of new pomegranate plants from seeds usually succeeds without any problems. The planting material is available in large numbers in the autumn and winter months. The pomegranate seeds are quite germinable, so that even an inexperienced hobby gardener can achieve quick success.

When growing new pomegranate plants from seed, it is not always certain that the self-grown sapling will ever flower. In the garden forums, hobby gardeners often report that pomegranate trees and shrubs grown from seed sometimes only flower for the first time after 10 years.

The decorative, compact pomegranate trees are beautiful tub plants even without flowers and fruit. They are robust and easy to care for. Its leathery, glossy green leaves are reddish when they sprout and turn slightly yellow in autumn before the foliage is shed for winter dormancy. The pomegranate trees are not hardy and must be overwintered in a frost-free room.

Collect and prepare seeds

The pomegranate season begins at the end of August. Care must be taken when opening a ripe pomegranate, as the squirts of juice leave dark red stains on clothing that are difficult to get out. The seeds are carefully removed from the fruit and must be completely freed from the pulp. Then put the seeds in warm water for about 12 hours to soak.

sowing

  • lay out a few seeds in a pot filled with potting soil or a sand-peat mixture,
  • Pomegranate seeds germinate in the light, so do not cover them with soil,
  • keep the seed warm, light and moist,
  • make sure that no waterlogging forms.

Care of the seedlings

Depending on the temperature, the seeds will germinate after three to six weeks, possibly longer. A greenhouse or clear film cover will help you keep the temperature and humidity levels even. The temperatures of 20-25° C are optimal. Plenty of light, but no blazing sun, is important for the good development of the seedlings. These are repotted as soon as the first leaves have formed.

tips and tricks

One way to obtain the seeds is to pass the seeds of a purchased pomegranate through a sieve. You can also buy the seeds in specialist shops for exotic plants and sow them at any time.
