A dense, green lawn is the dream of many garden owners. In addition to care, proper watering also plays a major role. What you need to consider when watering the lawn.

Why is proper watering so important?

The roots of the grass only reach about 15 centimeters deep into the ground. However, especially in summer or after long periods of drought, the water level drops so low that the roots cannot get to the moisture.

When should the lawn be watered?

When the grass starts to turn brown, it's almost too late to water. The lawn will recover, but it takes quite a long time before it forms a green carpet again.

You should therefore start watering at the latest when the leaves appear limp and take on a blue-green colour.

Water the lawn properly - the best time to water

Word has gotten around that it is harmful to water the lawn during the midday heat. The wet leaves would be burned by the intense sunlight. In addition, the water consumption is then very high because most of the water evaporates and does not penetrate the soil.

If possible, you should have your lawn sprinkled with a lawn sprinkler (€26.95) early in the morning. If this is not possible, blast the area at night, in the morning and in the evening.

Water daily - yes or no?

Daily blasting with little water is not enough. As a rule, the water does not seep deep enough into the ground. It is better if you only water every four days to once a week in the morning and evening, but then pour enough water that the moisture penetrates up to 15 centimeters deep into the soil.

As a rule of thumb, you can remember that on light soil you need 10 to 15 liters of water per square meter to water the lawn properly. If the soil is very solid, you should calculate between 15 and 20 liters of water.

If there is sufficient water, sandy soils only need to be watered every three to four days. For lawns on loamy soil, a weekly irrigation is sufficient, as these soils retain water longer.

Did you water enough?

This can be determined in two ways. Either dig out a small piece of grass with a spade and see how wet the soil is. You simply put the turf back in.

When irrigating with a lawn sprinkler, simply set up a rain gauge.
