Most Canna species are not hardy. Just a few degrees below 0 can mean their end. They are particularly sensitive to cool wet conditions. So it's time to hibernate!

Overwinter outdoors or at home?
Overwintering the plant outside is less recommended. It is better to dig up the tubers and bring them through the winter at home, for example in the conservatory, in the cellar, in the garage or in the attic.
How is canna prepared for overwintering?
As soon as the first frost in October approaches and the leaves of Canna have turned yellow or brown, you should radically prune the flower back to 5 cm above the ground. How to proceed:
- dig up the tuber
- brush off the remaining soil
- Leave the tuber to dry for a few days
Where can canna be overwintered?
The bulb of the flower cane is best overwintered in dark and cool places. The place should be dry. A box with sand or a pot with soil, for example, are well suited.
What must be considered when overwintering?
There are mistakes that are not uncommon when hibernating. The following must be observed:
- outdoors: provide with a 20 cm thick layer of mulch and ensure good drainage
- never water or fertilize
- choose frost-free winter quarters
- not warmer than 15 °C
- Keep the tuber from drying out (if necessary, spray the soil with water)
- Plant out no earlier than mid-May
tips and tricks
Attention: Do not cut back the plant too early! The tuber draws nutrients from the leaves before the above-ground parts of the plant die off (turn yellow or brown).
