The canna, also known as the flower cane, originally comes from the tropical Asian region. For this reason, it is not adapted to the local climatic conditions. Can you still overwinter them outside?

The flower cane - extremely sensitive to frost

The flower cane is not made for the wintry temperatures in this country. It is sensitive to frost. For this reason it should not be wintered outside. The probability that the plant will die is extremely high.

Alternatively, the plant can stand in the conservatory over the winter or be overwintered indoors. Please note:

  • Cut the plant back to the ground in autumn
  • Dig up and clean tubers
  • layer in sand, earth or wood shavings
  • overwinter in a frost-free but cool place

tips and tricks

The canna rhizomes do not need much space to overwinter. It is enough to put them in a bucket with sand or earth and put them in the basement or garage.
