Many people only know the hydrangea as a pretty houseplant or garden flower that is regularly cut to about the same height as other perennials. If you do without this pruning, the magnificent flowering shrub can grow up to four meters tall, depending on the variety.

Peasant hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla)

The farmer's hydrangea is often sold cultivated in a pot as a "mother's day flower". It is one of the species most commonly found in our gardens. If you plant this hydrangea outdoors, it can grow up to two meters high.

Oak-Leaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia)

This hydrangea owes its name to the beautifully lobed foliage that resembles that of the native oaks. The cone-shaped umbels reach a size of up to thirty centimeters and hang down slightly. Depending on the variety, it grows between 1.50 meters and 3 meters high. It tends to get a bit sprawling and can be cut back in spring if necessary.

Climbing Hydrangea (Hydrangea petiolaris)

This hydrangea grows very slowly at first and usually only flowers after a few years. With its adhesive roots, it can cling to rough surfaces and then reach heights of up to seven meters.

Panicle Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata)

In its natural habitat, this species grows to impressive shrubs seven meters tall, but rarely exceeds two meters in our home gardens. It is quite tolerant of pruning and, depending on personal preference, can be raised as a small spherical bush or standard tree.

Velvet hydrangea (Hydrangea sargentiana)

This hydrangea owes its German plant name to the pretty velvety leaves that are covered with a dense, white-grey down on the underside. With good care, it grows up to four meters high.

Hydrangea (Hydrangea serrata)

This hydrangea captivates with its natural blooms that form a colorful ring around the inconspicuous inner blooms. Plate hydrangeas not only form smaller flowers than the closely related farmer's hydrangea, their growth and size are also smaller. As a result, the pretty shrubs fit very well into small bones, even when uncut.

Forest hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens)

These white or green flowering hydrangeas have become increasingly popular in recent years, as their unusual appearance fits perfectly into modern gardens. They grow up to three meters tall and form balls of flowers up to 25 centimeters in diameter.

tips and tricks

Many hydrangeas are not fully hardy. It is therefore advisable not to plant them until they have reached a certain size. Slowly accustom potted plants to the changed outdoor conditions before planting them in the bed.
