Some magnolias reach considerable heights with age: Depending on the variety, the tree can grow up to eight meters or even higher, and in most cases it strives both in height and in width. No wonder, then, that the magnolia should be trimmed from time to time.

Prune magnolia after flowering
The best time to prune a magnolia is in spring or early summer, after the early bloomer has finished flowering. Then the tree still has enough time to process this intervention and to recover over the warm growing season. Keep in mind, however, that the faded flowers will give rise to interestingly shaped fruits in autumn. On the other hand, pruning in autumn should be avoided, unless there is storm damage or dead or diseased wood needs to be removed.
tips and tricks
In general, however, a magnolia should be pruned as little as possible and preferably not at all. The tree reacts very sensitively to such interventions, and very unattractive-looking water shoots often grow from the cuts.
