The magnolia with its beautiful, fragrant flowers is one of the most beautiful ornamental trees in our gardens. Anyone who is not lucky enough to call a garden their own would like to have this spring beauty in their home. However, cultivation as a houseplant is usually not crowned with success.

Indoor magnolia will not bloom

From a botanical point of view, magnolias are mostly large shrubs that can reach heights of three meters and more - and just as wide. Some types of magnolia, on the other hand, grow more as a tree that can reach a height of six meters or more. Magnolias, even if they grow very slowly, need a lot of space. For their well-being, they also need a place that is as sunny and sheltered as possible outdoors, where they can stay over the winter. After all, magnolia varieties that are commercially available in this country are in most cases hardy. Indoor magnolias may grow for a few years, but then eventually stop growing and wither. Also, indoor magnolias hardly ever bloom, even if they sometimes bud. However, the hopefully awaited bursting of buds rarely occurs, instead they simply drop off.

Magnolia as a container plant on the balcony or terrace

Although it is not advisable to keep the magnolia as a houseplant, small species can still be cultivated in a bucket. However, this should be given a sunny and sheltered spot on the balcony or terrace, and the bucket must be big enough - it's better to be too big than too small. The magnolia is one of the flat roots, its roots spread out like a plate around the plant and also need a lot of space. In winter, a pot magnolia needs good protection so that its sensitive roots do not freeze and the plant may die. Under no circumstances should the magnolia overwinter in the warm living room, it would be better to keep it under cold house conditions. Deciduous species can also stand in a dark place, after all, no photosynthesis takes place without leaves.

tips and tricks

If you are looking for a beautiful, flowering indoor plant, try a hibiscus. In particular, the rose hibiscus (also called China rose or rose mallow) is ideal for this purpose and impresses with its equally beautiful flowers.
