Lilies in the apartment should be watered regularly and fertilized once a month

How should the lilies be watered?

During the growing season from March to September, indoor lilies should be watered regularly. The soil is kept evenly moist. Even in winter it is important that the soil does not dry out. The pot should have holes through which excess irrigation water can drain.

How and with what should lilies be fertilized in the apartment?

From spring to flowering some fertilizer should be given every 4 weeks. A liquid fertilizer should be used for this. Long-term fertilizers in the form of sticks are particularly suitable. As soon as the buds can be seen, a bloom fertilizer is recommended, which is given moderately and once.

Do lilies in the apartment need pruning?

Regardless of whether the lily is in a bed or in a pot as a houseplant, it needs two cuts:

  • Cut off dead inflorescences
  • Cut off dead stems and leaves in late summer/autumn
  • do not cut beforehand: onions draw nutrients from the leaves and stems
  • use a sharp, clean knife to cut

Are they more susceptible to disease than garden lilies?

Lilies in the apartment can be affected by fungal diseases. The probability is higher than with garden lilies. The reason: waterlogging can quickly occur in the pot, the roots are in the water and the ideal breeding ground is created for fungi. Above all, the stalk base rot is considered to be widespread.

How can the lilies be propagated?

Very few dare to multiply lilies in the home. They can be propagated by means of so-called stem bulbs, bulbils or their underground bulbs. The best time for propagation is after flowering.

Should they be overwintered and repotted?

The lily in the apartment should be placed in the basement or another cool and frost-free place during the winter. Before that, it will be cut down. After the winter, it is repotted and gets new soil.
