For many years, the daffodils sprout every spring and shortly afterwards were in full bloom. But suddenly the flowers are a long time coming. It's May and they still haven't appeared.

A lack of nutrients can result in the daffodil not flowering

Main reason: lack of nutrients

In most cases, the reason for the failure of the flower is an energy or nutrient deficit. In addition to a lack of fertilization, competing plants are possible causes. Even your own kind can steal nutrients…

Could it be that your daffodils have been in their location for a long time and have never been divided? If so, the obvious cause is that too many side bulbs have been formed. If there are too many of them in one place, there will quickly be a nutrient deficiency.

Other reasons for flower failure

In addition to the nutrient deficit, there are many other reasons that can prevent the daffodil from flowering. These include, in particular, the following:

  • illness
  • pest infestation
  • unfavorable location
  • lack of fertilizer or over-fertilization
  • dryness

preventive measures

Fundamentally decisive for a flowering daffodil is a beneficial location. It should be planted in the sun or semi-shade in nutrient-rich soil.

In addition to the location, maintenance is important. Potted daffodils need to be repotted every year. They should also be fertilized before and after flowering. A liquid fertilizer is suitable for this. Last but not least, they should be regularly supplied with water (low in lime). It is important to avoid waterlogging.

Outdoor daffodils should only be fertilized moderately. Compost is enough for you. The fertilizer is given to the root area from the sprouting and carefully raked in. The daffodils are dug up every 3 to 4 years. The daughter bulbs are separated and disposed of or planted elsewhere.

measures afterwards

In retrospect, transplanting or fertilizing helps with many daffodils. If the daffodil fly is at work, the bulbs must be disposed of. In the case of a fungal disease such as bulb basal rot, the affected daffodils should also be discarded. Otherwise there is a risk that other daffodils will be affected by the fungal pathogen.

tips and tricks

Don't prune your daffodils too early. Only when the leaves have turned yellow is a cut acceptable to them.
