In cold regions and in exposed locations, you can help your peasant hydrangeas through the winter with a little protection.

Protect the roots of your peasant hydrangea from frost with bark mulch

Blossom endangered by frost

Farmer's hydrangeas are one of the hydrangea species that bloom on the previous year's wood and develop the flower buds for the following year there in the late summer. At the same time, this means that these flower buds are endangered by winter frosts and must therefore be protected - even if the hydrangea itself is actually hardy. Otherwise it will not flower the following year.

Effective winter protection for farmer's hydrangeas

For sensible winter protection, carefully cover the plants with bark mulch or leaves in winter, with a thick and dry layer of leaves offering the best protection. To do this, place a wire mesh frame (€14.99) around the plant and pour in plenty of leaves, which can also be mixed with straw. You can also wrap peasant hydrangeas with raffia mats. Here, too, leaves thrown in between offer additional protection from the cold.

tips and tricks

Farmhouse hydrangeas cultivated in tubs should not overwinter outdoors, as the root ball freezes through too quickly. A frost-free, but cool and bright overwintering makes more sense.
