The care of the cycad is not to be taken lightly. A sure instinct is required here! He is reluctant to forgive gross mistakes and is considered demanding. However, the following tips can keep it growing and healthy.

The cycad likes it moist but not too wet

How is the cycad properly watered?

The water supply of the cycad, which is usually used as a houseplant, should be ensured all year round. It is watered regularly and evenly. A slightly moist soil pleases him. But don't be too hasty! Water only when the top layer of soil has dried!

You can also make your cycad happy by spraying it from time to time. Alternatively, if you don't have a hand sprayer, you can use a damp cloth to wipe over the fronds. The side effect: Dust is removed from the fronds.

Fertilizing the cycad - is that difficult?

The cycad has a low to medium nutrient requirement. For this reason, it should not be fertilized too intensively. Mineral fertilizers should not be used. It is sufficient to provide the cycad with a liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks between April and September.

Is hibernation necessary?

Since the cycad does not tolerate frost, it should be in a frost-free place over the winter:

  • Room temperatures between 15 and 17 °C
  • good places to spend the winter: cellar with window, staircase, conservatory, bedroom
  • do not expose to the winter sun
  • do not fertilize
  • water less
  • gradually get used to the sunlight after the winter

When does the cycad have to be repotted?

When the stem of the cycad takes up around 2/3 of the soil surface in the pot, it is time to repot. This is usually the case every 3 to 4 years. The best time to start repotting is in the spring between February and March.

Do you have to cut the cycad?

A cycad does not need pruning. But if you see brown or dried up leaves, these can be removed. Make sure you only remove those leaves or fronds that have completely dried up. Wear gloves - the cycad is poisonous!
