Spindle trees require little maintenance when grown in the right location. If you pay attention to the tree, you will be surprised with colorful fruiting. Regular pruning keeps the trees in shape, while occasional fertilization and watering ensure optimal growth conditions.

location

Spindle trees prefer a location that is as bright as possible, which can be in direct sunlight. The heat-requiring tree also thrives in semi-shade. Locations that are too dark cause the plant to develop few flowers. Humus-rich soil offers the spindle shrub optimal growth conditions. A deep soil is recommended.

Natural Spread:

  • Southern and Central Europe
  • Asia Minor
  • absent in Scotland and Scandinavia

pour

The conspicuous shrubs grow wild at the edges of forests and in alluvial forests. Their fine roots do not tolerate waterlogging, as this quickly leads to the formation of rot. Make sure you have a regular water supply and water the shrub regularly. When the soil has dried on its surface, further watering will be necessary. Reduce the amount of water from the beginning of September. Then the plants slowly retire to prepare for winter.

Fertilize

The main growing season for the spindle tree is from April to the end of July. During this time, the plant needs a lot of nutrients. Give the shrub regular liquid fertilizer over the irrigation water. In spring and autumn you can spread a thick layer of compost on the ground. Alternatively, a mulch layer made from lawn clippings is suitable. You can also incorporate horn shavings (€32.93) into the substrate so that the plant is supplied with nitrogen for a longer period of time.

To cut

The spindle shrub plants are regularly pruned as young plants. While shape cuts are possible all year round, clearing cuts are recommended for spring. They can also be done in the fall. Spindle trees tolerate a radical pruning back into the old wood. They sprout again in the following growth phase and develop dense branches.

Good to know:

  • flowers are developed on biennial wood
  • Radical pruning prohibited between March and September

hibernate

The euonymus proves to be frost hardy and gets through the winter without additional protection. Potted plants should be protected with jute bags, as the root ball freezes quickly. Bonsai should be protected accordingly, even if they easily tolerate temperatures down to -20 degrees Celsius.
