Spindle hats not only cut a fine figure in the garden and tub. Bonsai forms of the flowering spindle shrub are rather unknown. Because of its properties, the wood is ideal for growing the mini tree. It is well suited for beginners.

layout

Spindle hats can be made into different shapes. However, this is only possible with young plants, because the wood quickly becomes hard and can no longer be bent afterwards. Start wiring early and make regular cuts. Typical shapes are the upright form or the multiple trunk. Both forms are suitable for beginners as they are easy to achieve.

This makes spindle trees shine as bonsai:

  • decorative fruits
  • bold fall colors
  • thrive in shallow and very small pots
  • hardy to -20 °C

cutting measures

After a radical pruning, the spindle tree will sprout again. The wood also reliably develops buds on the old branches. Remove branches at their base if they disrupt the overall look. Numerous shoots quickly form at the interface, striving in all directions. In this way you can replace unsightly branches or those that can no longer be bent with fresh shoots. Cut off unneeded new shoots in good time to avoid thickening.

When you have formed a branch and it has grown long enough, remove the leaves on the new shoots with the exception of a maximum of three pairs of leaves. Spindle trees naturally develop comparatively small leaves that are arranged opposite one another. Pluck leaves alternately on the right and left side and spare the opposite leaves. Root shoots should be cut off constantly.

maintenance

Spindle trees need to be watered regularly to keep the root ball from drying out. Drought leads to leaf loss. The lime-loving plants tolerate tap water. The plants react sensitively to too high a salt content in the substrate. Make sure there is good drainage to prevent waterlogging.

Between April and the end of July, the bonsai enjoys a nutrient supply. Give the plants a solid organic bonsai fertilizer. The bale should be watered extensively beforehand, as the fertilizer can burn the roots. The plant is repotted about every two to three years.
