Find seedling in nature

Birch trees are highly efficient in their propagation. They colonize even barren fallow areas extremely successfully. The pioneer plants thrive even under difficult conditions. This has an advantage for your project: Because in spring you will almost certainly find several small birch plants in the vicinity of a fully grown birch. These seedlings are perfect for growing a birch tree in your home garden.

Planting young birch from seedling

  1. Carefully dig out the root ball of your desired tree with the spatula.
  2. Now you can plant the young birch: in a prepared hole in the garden or in a pot.
  3. The best location is sunny semi-shade.
  4. Keep the seedling moist but not too wet.

Pull cuttings from branch

You can also grow a seedling from a cutting and then plant it. Since the birch only reproduces by spreading the wind, i.e. by scattering seeds, you have to offer your cuttings the best possible conditions so that they can take root. Proceed as follows:

  1. Separate a strong shoot tip branch from a mature birch tree.
  2. Make sure that it is a heavily woody specimen underneath with several so-called eyes. The branch must look nice and green at the top and should be at least 10 to 20 centimeters long overall.
  3. Now remove all the leaves below, while cutting away particularly large leaves in the upper area and also removing the beginnings of the flowers so that the plant does not have to supply them with energy unnecessarily.
  4. Now you can plant the cutting very carefully and as straight as possible in a small pot with soil.
  5. Place it in a sunny semi-shade and make sure that the substrate always stays well moist. Avoid wet and direct sun.
  6. Wait until the first roots appear above the ground. Now your young birch is ready to move to a larger pot or straight into the garden soil.
