New potatoes sprout early and use the first warmth of the year to grow and blossom. It won't be long before the tubers are harvested. When can we start the harvest season, dig up the first specimens and enjoy them?

The first new potatoes from our own garden will be available from the end of June

A short maturing period

Early potato varieties are characterized by a short ripening period.

  • Depending on the variety, they need between 70 and 100 days
  • the weather also has an influence
  • the warmer the days, the earlier the harvest

So if you plant the potatoes at the beginning of April, you can already harvest fresh tubers in June. Suitable for the first local asparagus!

Earlier harvest time through pre-germination

If the seed potatoes have been able to germinate in a light and warm place, the harvest time can start about 2 to 3 weeks earlier.

Harvest time in the greenhouse

New potatoes can also be grown in the greenhouse. The special conditions there allow planting to start up to three weeks earlier and, consequently, an earlier harvest as well.
