Even if the wisteria from Asia is considered to be very hardy, it prefers a sunny and warm location. The flower buds, which are already established in autumn, are quite sensitive to frost, especially late frosts, when budding is already beginning.

The wisteria blooms most profusely in a sunny location

What should the soil be like?

Wisteria does not make excessive demands on the soil, it should be permeable and loose. Neither excessive dryness nor waterlogging are beneficial for the wisteria to thrive. If it becomes too dry before or during flowering, your Wisteria may shed all buds and blooms.

If the level of nitrogen in the soil is too high, then your wisteria will shoot up incredibly and it will develop very long shoots, but the abundance of flowers will fall far short of your expectations.

Does location affect flowering of wisteria?

If the wisteria is in the shade, then it thrives far less well than in the sun. This is reflected in the small size as well as in the lack of flowering. On the other hand, growth and flowering are mediocre in partial shade. If you can, you should therefore plant your wisteria in a sunny spot.

The essentials in brief:

  • as sunny as possible for a rich flowering
  • also thrives in semi-shade, but with moderate flowering
  • no waterlogging
  • Don't let the root area dry out
  • choose rather nitrogen-poor soil, fresh to slightly moist

tips

It is best to look for a suitable location before you buy the wisteria and also pay attention to the growth of surrounding plants and trees. In this way you ensure a lush bloom in the future.
