The creeping juniper is not only known as a bonsai. It also looks good in wild outdoor cultivation and impresses with its undemanding character. To what extent does it tolerate drought, what is its frost hardiness and what kind of care is really necessary?

The creeping juniper is quite easy to care for

Does the creeping juniper have to be watered or does it tolerate drought?

At times, the creeping juniper can cope with drought. But it is better not to let the soil dry out. It should be kept slightly moist with regular and even watering. Use low-lime water for this if the creeping juniper is outside and there is no rain. Waterlogging should be avoided at all costs!

  • for pot culture: wrap with foil or fleece
  • after the winter, the creeping juniper can be repotted (every 4 to 5 years)

Is it necessary to fertilize it?

When fertilizing, these aspects should be considered:

  • Fertilizing is not absolutely necessary
  • use organic fertilizer
  • growth accelerated by fertilizer application
  • fertilize in spring
  • e.g. B. with compost or special juniper fertilizer
  • for pot culture: supply with liquid fertilizer every 4 to 8 weeks
  • Fertilization period: April to September at the latest

What is essential when cutting?

It is extremely pruning friendly, but does not necessarily need a pruning or shape cut. If you want to prune the creeping juniper, do so in spring or fall.

Remember:

  • before cutting: remove dead wood
  • Cut green branches, don't cut old wood
  • Wear gloves and, if necessary, protective clothing (prick needles)
  • gladly thin out every 2 years
  • Cut cuttings for propagation if necessary
