Modern jostaberries grow stronger than many classic berry bushes. This requires modified cut care that counteracts premature balding and senescence. These instructions will make you familiar with the perfect pruning care of a yolk.

Cut jostaberries after harvesting
When it comes to the right pruning date, a jostaberry pulls in the same direction as its progenitors, black currant and gooseberry. The best time for a thinning and maintenance cut is after the harvest. This has the advantage that you can clearly identify worn rods. If you missed the summer editing date, a second time window opens in late winter. A special advantage of this choice of date is a leafless berry bush, which offers a good overview for expert pruning.
cutting instructions
Please cut the berry bush once a year to prevent a jostaberry from growing too much for you, wilting and aging prematurely. Pruning care is aimed at old, dark brown shoots that are largely exhausted. The most valuable treasure of a yolk is the one-year-old, light brown long shoots that bloom and bear fruit on numerous short shoots. How to cut correctly:
- Saw off old, dark brown shoots at the base
- Important: do not leave any butts
- Shorten removed side shoots to just before the bark of the scaffolding shoot
- Multi-branched side shoots lead to the youngest side branch
On the skeleton shoot with multiply branched side shoots, use the cutting technique of the derivative. Cut off the older side shoot at the fork to the younger side branch. The darker the color of the bark, the older the shoot. Please measure the size of the cut in such a way that there is a balance of perennial and young shoots on the jostaberry bush.
Bypass shears and folding saw
With the right tool, you can cut a jostaberry without much effort and in a way that is extra gentle on the plant. Ideally, cut shoots up to about 3 centimeters in diameter with bypass scissors. The way it works is based on two sharp blades that run against each other and create smooth cuts. Saw off thick scaffolding shoots with a folding saw (€17.70), which you can use to maneuver in the tightest of spaces.
Cut annual wood as cuttings
In the regular pruning of a jostaberry, light brown, one-year-old shoots are taboo because they promise a rich berry harvest in the future. The only exception is if you want to grow more wildberries. Between September and April, cut off annual, unbranched shoot tips that are 15 to 20 centimeters long.
Plant two-thirds of a leafless cutting in a pot with potting soil. On the bright, warm windowsill, water regularly so that the offshoot roots quickly. If you put a transparent hood over the pot, the rooting process will speed up.
tips
In order to radically rejuvenate an aging Jostaberry, there is no difference to the blackcurrant. At the end of February, cut off old scaffolding shoots at ground level. Ground shoots with promising side shoots lead you there. The age is easy to recognize by means of a dark brown bark. Young shoots with light brown, smooth bark remain as a starting point for new growth.
